FROM WASTE BIN TO MoMa

The design story that began with a single, casual question…
In 1932, 17-year-old Holger Nielsen wins a car in a lottery. Since he doesn’t have a driver’s license, he promptly sells the car and establishes a metal workshop in the small Danish town of Randers.
In 1939, his wife Marie opens a hair salon and asks the question that changes everything:
“Holger, I need a waste bin for my salon. Can you make me one?”
The pedal bin he develops is as simple as it is ingenious: a pedal opens the lid without the need to touch it with your hands. Especially in hair salons, doctors’ offices, or clinics, this becomes a small everyday revolution. Word of its functionality and quality spreads quickly—and soon the Vipp bin is not only in Marie’s salon, but also in practices and businesses across Denmark.
